Second Storey Home Extension

House Extensions

Illawong- Sydney   $350K - $550K
Mum, Dad and 2 growing children

The Brief

A home that no longer supports family growth.

This original single-level home, typical of many 1980s–90s builds, had become tight and inefficient for a growing family with teenagers. Every square metre mattered, the layout felt cramped and awkward.

An outdated floor plan, poor circulation, and a laundry positioned in the middle of the dining area made everyday living difficult. The home felt closed-in and no longer met a growing family. Rather than moving, our client chose a home renovation and extension to unlock the home’s full potential.

The Result

A seamless and integrated upper floor home extension that nestle neatly into the existing design language and surrounding homes area.

The solution was to build upwards. By adding a second-storey extension, we gained the freedom to move an existing ground-floor bedroom upstairs, freeing up valuable space. The two bedrooms were placed within the upper level and included a comfortable and spacious lounge room, dedicated study and shower room.

This strategic home extension then created the opportunity to deliver long-overdue kitchen and laundry renovations, significantly improving flow and functionality.

Upper floor teenage retreat: A space they can grow into

The new second storey was designed as a private zone for the family’s teenagers, providing independence while remaining connected to the home.

A dedicated study nook supports homework and university preparation, while a secondary living area offers space to relax and connect with friends while provide private individual bedrooms.

Ground floor: Renovating and reformatting those unworkable spaces

The kitchen renovation By removing enclosing walls and extending the kitchen into the dining area, this created an opportunity for a true open-plan kitchen. A large central island provides storage, seating and a focal point for family life and entertaining.

The laundry renovation: The floor plan opened up dramatically with walls removed from this segmented space,  What was once congested circulation space now affords a  generous dining area with clear walkways and connection to the kitchen, laundry and general livings zones,  not to mention the new staircase accessing the upper floor .

With the structural bottlenecks resolved, the home now supports busy family life with ease, providing both physical and emotional space to grow and change over time.

What the client said

We have finished a renovation with Rossmark to add a second storey to our home in addition to changes to the bottom level and we are so pleased with the result, and all completed within 6 months! We would highly recommend Rossmark for those looking to renovate. From design, to approvals, to planning, to selections, to build, to fit out - the expertise, the advice, the flexibility, the helpfulness, the friendliness. We were even able to live through the build with minimal disruption. Thank you to the whole team - special mentions to Peter, Glenn, Bailey, Ryan, Ben, Jeremy and Lisa.
